Happy New Year to all my fellow bloggers and readers.

For my first 2020 post, I want to draw attention to the devastating bushfires that are currently ravaging many parts of Australia. To date, wildfires have destroyed 12 million acres and nearly 2000 homes. Twenty-five people have died. It’s estimated that half a billion animals have perished. About a third of the koala population in NSW has gone. Drought stricken farmers have had massive loss in livestock. There are many short term impacts and there will be great long term ramifications from these bushfires.

I want to support and bring awareness to the fundraisers and charities that will help those affected; people who have had their lives shattered through the loss of loved ones, displaced by homes burnt down, and livelihoods destroyed. Not to mention the many animals injured and their lost habitats.

If you can donate, please do. Every bit counts. These funds will help provide immediate relief and go towards recovery and rebuilding efforts. I’ve included a few links.

  1. Just heard on the radio this morning that it’s over a billion animals thought lost now. Not to mention the people, housing and livelihoods lost. Puts the smoke haze that has become part of life in areas that did not even have fires in the shade! Us Aussies are fighters: we’ll pull together and get through this. Those links are helpful – good idea.

  2. Thank you for sharing the links! They need all the help they can get. This is so devastating and sad. Here in the USA, in addition to the donations, people have been knitting blankets and they are sent to hold the animals. They showed pictures of them on our news today. It is so sad they didn’t use the fireworks money for the fire and postponed the New Years fireworks. I just can’t figure that one out. I did hear they were starting to get the fire under control, I hope that is true. Sending all my prayers and I hope it ends soon!

    1. There is a bit of reprieve from the weather but Friday is hot again and I believe there are concerns of mega-fires from the joining of separate fires. I truly hope this doesn’t happen. Our brave firefighters have done a great job of containing a lot of the fires. I agree the fireworks should have been postponed in light of the bushfires. People are so nice to knit blankets for the animals!
